Antique Sterling Silver & Vermeil Medal Watch Fob, Marked For The Light Horse Breeding Society
Antique Sterling Silver & Vermeil Medal Watch Fob, Marked For The Light Horse Breeding Society
A sterling silver and gilt medal for the Light Horse Breeding Society. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham and the year 1938. The medal was made by Mappin & Webb and is also is marked “Hunters Improvement & National”. Excellent workmanship on this piece. One side features an unsaddled horse and the other side features a gentleman and jockey with a saddled horse. Most of the Mappin & Webb medal I have seen are done in sterling silver. This medal/watch fob is unusual as it has a gilt wash.
It is a collector’s item; however, the medal would make an attractive accessory by simply adding a black silk cord so it could be worn.
Measurements: 1 7/8 in diameter with an extra ¼ where the bale attaches and weighs 54 grams or 1.72 troy ounces.
Condition Report; Very good. I have not cleaned the medal since I feel personally the bit of tarnish adds to the character.
