Antique French Mahogany Dressing Box Mother of Pearl Inlay & Mirror
Antique French Mahogany Dressing Box Mother of Pearl Inlay & Mirror
An antique mahogany veneered dressing box with mirror and original blue silk lining. The dresser box features a brass surround on the lid, brass and copper inlaid work, mother of pearl, and abalone details. The lid and front of the box have been beautifully worked with all these materials with a light Rococo flourish. Lined with robin’s egg blue silk both inside the box and on the top where a beveled mirror is inset in tufted silk. A partial paper label on the bottom of the box is quiet worn; however, the words du Louvre can be made out. Les Grands Magasins du Louvre was a store located in Paris (opened 1855) and the label could be for this store.
French; Circa 1870
Measurements; 9 ½” X 6 ½” X 4”
Condition report; Very good, a few small pieces of veneer are missing. Silk is quite clean with only a few spots, mirror and tufts are in good order and are tight. The box closes tightly and requires a firm grip to open. No original key. Small supports inside the box suggest that at one time there was a tray.
