An antique papier mache tea caddy featuring Mother of Pearl decoration. The Mid-Victorian caddy with serpentine front has two interior compartments for tea. The top features a design with a central floral display along with a bird on each side. A handsome caddy of the quality of Jennens & Bettridge; perhaps, an unmarked J&B box. Rich glossy black accented with gold and some of Mother Nature's shimmering handiwork.
English Circa 1850; Lock is marked with VR for Victoria Regina and Patent, no other mark found. A key is included with the box; this may or may not be the original. It works with a little encouragement. Measurements; 8 ¼" X 6" X 5 ¼" Condition; very good, small chip on back of box near hinge, some loss of gilt work, most of the silver interior is still intact. Crazing in a accordance with age and use. Please note the pictures showing the loss of the silvered lining which is quite normal for a box of this age. As with all antique boxes which have generally been stored closed the box may have an odor associated with age.
