Antique Figural English Silver Plate Condiment Set, Dog with Basket
An antique Victorian Era silver plate condiment holder in the form of a dog holding a basket. A well modeled piece is a unique way to serve any condiment of your choice bet it salt, dry mustard, or cayenne pepper.
Its realistic design in the form of a retriever or hunting dog adds a luxurious, artistic touch to dinner tables.
I have only seen a few of these condiment sets over the years. Others did have a carrier that went over the do’s back that had two other condiment dishes. These were added by screwing off the handle on the top. Recently a top designer re-created a similar pair to use as salt cellars for a popular on-line decorating website. This one is an antique and not new.
The piece bears a diamond shaped Registry mark that England used from 1842 until 1883. Symbols are worn and difficult to read. I will place this as a late Victorian.
